"Woah, woah, now hold on a moment! There's plenty of me to go around, guys."[break][break]

Corbin chuckles, shaking his head as he narrowly side-steps an outstretched tail. The newly hatched Azurill were similar in likeness to a spilled jar of gumballs. They bounced everywhere and were so small that one had to tread lightly so as to not accidentally trip over them.[break][break]

Fortunately, he is a patient man.[break][break]

His trip to Sootopolis had originally been a sort of mini-vacation, and yet he'd found himself volunteering in the community anyway. Corbin had gone from sightseeing and exploring the city with its intricate architecture and beauty to stopping short when he heard the telltale signs of a person in need.[break][break]

It turns out local daycare had experienced a sudden influx of eggs, and Corbin had turned down the street just in time for the mass hatching to begin. Now, he was armed to the teeth with hungry baby Azurill and an apologetic daycare owner.[break][break]

"You said these tykes are up for adoption? Why don't we take them down by the water to let them play a bit? Maybe some probable up-and-coming trainers will take an interest. Either way, I can take them off your hands for an hour or two while you work. I don't mind."[break][break]

After some reassuring, Corbin stands guard by the lake area in the heart of Sootopolis, a clipboard tucked under his arm. For the most part, the Azurill are self-sufficient in keeping themselves busy, meaning he could spend more time talking to random civilians passersby.[break][break]

Melody had taken advantage of the lovely spring weather and decided to take out some of her baby pokemon to train them a bit. She sent out her Mantyke and her Dewpider. That Dewpider was a strange one...and that strangeness gave melody a bit of anxiety for some reason, but surely that'd fade over time? "Ok guys lets start." she said as she clapped her hands together to get their attention, it worked if only for a moment. Mantyke and dewpider seemed to have their own ideas though and immediately vanished beneath the water and began to swam off towards the other side of the central lake of sootopolis. "HEY! WAIT A SECOND!" she said shouting at them, she start to run to a different section of the lake they were heading to where she happened to stumble upon a trainer with some azurill. It seemed like her unruly pokemon wanted to play with the other baby pokemon as she caught her dewpider riding mantyke and playing chase. "Are these yours? im so sorry for causing you trouble." she said as she looked over to her pokemon giving them an upset stare "Oi! dont leave my sight again! who knows what trouble you could have gotten into!"

Corbin has pulled up a chair to sit by the water and read. He is all but giving off the impression of a dad peering Overton of his reading glasses to skim the daily newspaper while 'babysitting'. Only, he is actually really good at multitasking.[break][break]

What he isn't expecting, however, is for his handful of baby Pokemon to multiply. Or for an Azurill to leap out of the water and in his lap, soaking him through and ruining the newspaper he's reading. He stands up abruptly with a gasp, juggling a startled Pokemon as well as the now dripping wet paper.[break][break]

"No trouble at all, ma'am, they're just kids being kids. These guys are just freshly popped is all."[break][BREAK]

And when he looks up to see what the fuss is about, he does a double-take. The man's eyes dart back to the ink smeared paper in his hand and then back to her. Dumbly, he points to the woman and then to the paper, as if trying to formulate a sentence.[break][break]

"Hey.. you're the woman in the paper! And on the television, too. Not every day I meet a celebrity. Perhaps I should be apologizing to you, hmm? Are you training out here for your next gym battle?"[break][break]

Oh, he recognized her? Well she had to start getting used to that, more and more people knew of her because of her music and her position as a gym leader. "The one and only." she said scratching her head and acting a bit bashful at it. It was weird to have people know her before she knew them. "Melody Miro, gym leader of Sootopolis. Sadly no I'm not, I recently caught these two and was trying to train them but they seem to be the misbehaving type and they found some Pokémon to play with." she said extending her hand to shake his "Who are you? Whatcha up to?" she said as her dewpider and her mantyke seemingly dashed back into the water to play around with the azurill. [break][break]

"Ahh.. don't take it too personally. Babies don't listen to anybody, that's like a rule or something."[break][break]

One hand reaches to scratch the back of his head, a curious grin on his face as a result of her bashful behaviour. She seemed far shyer in person than the image she put on on the big screen. [break][break]

Corbin takes her hand to give it a firm shake, glancing back to the Pokemon in question she had mentioned. He puffs out a laugh, shaking his head. [break][break]

"Corbin Quinn, officer for Slateport PD. Not as fancy a title as gym leader, but I do my best."[break][break]

He offers the woman a coy wink as his attention resettles on her.[break][break]

"I'm babysitting, sorta. The plan was to be your run of the mill tourist here in Sootopolis, but I managed to rope myself into assisting the public. Seems to be my specialty - not that I mind. There's plenty of beauty to see even when I'm standing still, apparently."[break][break]

He smiles slightly, gauging her response.[break][break]

"Most likely cause we don't speak their language huh? Babies somehow always get into mischief together." she said laughing a bit at the shenanigans that her dewpider and her mantyke managed to create from just mere glances at each other. She also took note of his firm handshake, her father told here that just mere exchanges like this could tell her a lot about a person so she always made sure to watch for them. [break][break]

An officer huh? "Well, not as fancy but just as important, even more than a gym leader in my opinion. Pokémon only follow their instincts for survival, humans follow whatever greedy whims they have. " Pokémon were simple creatures, humans? Not so much. Was that a wink?? Her face turned red, she was always horrid with flirting. She turned away from him and sat down to watch the Pokémon all play "Well go on then you two, lesson's already been ruined. Just don't bully them ok? they're babies." she said as she was planning on getting comfortable and letting them tucker themselves out. [break][break]

"Sootopolis is known for it's beautiful architecture. The other day a challenger named Laurence Anderson showed me some of the previous gyms here. They were absolutely gorgeous, this place sometimes looks like something out of a fairytale book to me. The people, the Pokémon, the buildings. It's not my home town but I sure wish I was raised here." she said offering a light chuckle glad she was able to score living in this town.

"I think they're just young, rebellious spirits. But.. you might be right, they might have absolutely no idea what we're talking about. Well, other than food. They seem to be pretty quick on that one."[break][break]

He chuckles quietly, shaking his head in amusement at the thought. The man's lips remain curled in a casual smile, although his eyes don't stray from Melody's for long. The bouncing Azurill's giggling and splashing is nothing more than background noise. He keeps an eye on them, sure, but the way the woman's face flushes is admittedly more interesting.[break][break]

"Nah.. I mean sure, I keep people in line and stuff, but your job a hell of a lot bigger than mine. You're an educator, a teacher, a role model of sorts, right? You work hard for your city too, I'm sure."[break][break]

Melody sits down next to the water and Corbin respectfully hangs back a moment before joining her. He even gestures to the empty space next to her before just making himself comfortable. The man puts plenty of space between them, however, and lets out a sigh. One of the Azurill approaches to splash at him with water bashfully. He reciprocates in kind with a chuckle, scooping water with one hand to splash the Pokemon. It giggles and dives under the surface before returning back with its siblings.[break][break]

"Seems like a nice guy."[break][break]

He's fishing, more than he'd like to admit.[break][break]

"I would never have guessed you weren't from here. You fit in real well and seem so comfortable."[break][break]

"Yeah he was slash is." was all that she really offered in return, she didn't really know him all that well as it was their only meeting. Corbin ended up saying something that kind of struck a chord in her? It wasn't a bad chord per say but, the word role model held a significant meaning in her mind. Her recent conversations with Remiel Calcifet and with Chu-e Choi echoed within her mind, her goal with becoming a gym leader WAS to be a role model for the people of Hoenn. However once she actually got to the position she wondered if she was actually the best candidate for it? [break][break]

She laid those thoughts to rest as she couldn't just dump all of this on someone randomly on the first meeting. What was this? An edgy fanfic? Nah this was real life and it was never that easy to open up. She nodded her head for him to sit down, "Heh, a role model? A beautiful vacation spot with a happy go luck idol, who's platform promotes unity and peace in Hoenn. Especially off the heels of a rather yikes performance from Katherine Fairburne and Selena Desmarais during that press conference? Makes a lot more sense actually now that I put more thought into it." she laughed a bit and then made a yikes face when she realized what she had gotten herself into. [break][break]

Melody tried to keep the conversation off of her by asking about him "So what makes someone want to be a cop?" she pondered aloud, speaking into the air rather than speaking to him.

Corbin glances at Melody briefly at her clipped, indifferent response. Curious, but he isn't the type to pry. As pretty as she was, it felt inappropriate to turn the conversation toward whether or not she was seeing anyone. [break][break]

Fortunately, Melody has an excellent way of being compelling and interesting with her conversation. She seems reluctant to accept what he'd suggested, that she was a role model, deserving of the title. He chooses to listen rather than speak up, curious to see where she might take it. His expression is thoughtful and searching as he watches her.[break][break]

"You're bigger than you give yourself credit for, I think, Melody. I'm already impressed, and I've only just met you."[break][break]

He tilts his head at her 'yikes' face, and his lips curl into a soft smile at her question. [break][break]

"Well.. my father was a cop. A damn good one, too. I looked up to him as my role model, my hero, I guess. It was sort of always the path I chose to follow. For a minute there I wanted to be an astronaut, but.. helping people down here's a lot more useful and fulfilling. That and I was absolutely terrible at math and science."[break][break]

He scratches the back of his neck awkwardly, worried he might have overshared.[break][break]

Melody smiled, his aspirations were beautiful. He reached for the stars only to realize his true calling was on the ground in the world that surrounded him. "That's beautiful in my opinion, Hoenn needs more people like you Mr. Corbin." she said pulling her knees to her chest and resting her head on her kneecaps. "Don't even get my started on how horrid my math skills are, only thing I can do with numbers right is keep a tempo." as a chuckle escaped her lips. [break][break]

"Well as long as what you do is making you happy then it's the right choice for you." she offered as she looked over to the dewpider who was now doing tricks on mantyke's back as if the pokemon was a skateboard. Showing off the the other baby pokemon, what an interesting little creature...Where did he learn that? "So then Mr. Police officer, what do you do for fun around sootopolis? I've only just come so I don't know much about this place, only what I've read online so far."

The woman tucks her knees to her chest and he can't help but think the motion is both adorable and a little sad. It's almost as if he can see the weight of the world - her world at least - on her shoulders, and this was her attempt at keeping it together. That..that was fair, not everyone was going to be good at everything. But despite hearing that answer a million and one time's melody's stubborn resilience shone on and refused to not be good at something, math being the one exception.

"Alright, Corbin it is then." she smiled as she did NOT intend to make him feel old, he didn't look much older than her. Her ears did perk up however at him asking her what exactly is there to do in Sootopolis. "It's a lot of water activities and history tours from what I've seen. Poke-rides, helicopter tours, et cetera. Certain food spots where they a lot of traditional sea food dishes here and stuff." she said as she put her knees back down and laid back on the floor instead as she had a hard time sitting still. When he said that they could hang out and learn more about sootoplis together melody nodded "Sure! That sounds fun-" before he phone rang, oh fuck she was being called again. She slid her finger up on the notification to silence it for now "Well you know where to find me! I need to jet for now but it was nice to meet you corbin! Take care! AND YOU TWO." she said pouting at the two Pokémon "We ate up our entire practice time goofing off! Let's go!" she said as she had to discipline them a bit. They both panicked and swam back off towards the direction of the gym.
